Rwanda will be given considerable international attention once again as it will host the World Environment Day (WED) 2010, as announced by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) on February 17, 2010. The East African country, which is now considered as a model for developing countries, is currently embracing the “green movement.” Rwanda’s developing Green Economy has vastly improved with its push for pioneering environmental policies that paved the way for a remarkable recovery from its gloomy past. This is one of the reasons why the country was selected by UNEP to be the WED 2010 host.
World Environment Day 2010
World Environment Day is like “Earth Day” and is held on the 5th of June each year. On this day, awareness for the environment, political attention and public action are the focus. This annual event began on June 5, 1973 and was created by the United Nations General Assembly a year earlier, the same time the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment began. Different cities all over the world have been given the chance to host WED. The celebration has also embraced several different themes. This year, Rwanda will host the event with the theme “Many Species. One Planet. One Future.”
“Many Species. One Planet. One Future.”
This year’s WED theme will focus on the importance of the world’s wealth of species and ecosystems. The event aims to bring people of all ages, classes and nationalities together and encourage them to get involved with environmental causes. Various activities such as tree planting, clean-up drives, environmental campaigns, exhibits and photo competitions will be held during this year’s WED.
Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame expressed gratitude and optimism for this year’s WED when he stated, “We are honored to host World Environment Day on behalf of both the African and the whole international community, and we look forward to organizing a truly global celebration of the diversity of life on our planet.”
