Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Inc (TMS) recently announced that it is participating with the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) WasteWise program. WasteWise, the first national voluntary initiative on solid waste reduction, tries to encourage groups and other establishments to lessen their municipal solid waste by practicing waste prevention, recycling and producing or purchasing recycled goods.

Bob Wade, the company’s Environmental, Hazardous Material and Safety Department’s corporate manager, believes that the WasteWise program is a good chance to showcase the hard work of Toyota associates in contributing to the efforts in recycling and waste reduction.

Last year, Toyota Motor Sales recycled more than 86% of its waste, which weighed over 24,000,000 pounds. The EPA estimated the quantity of greenhouse gas lessened as a result of the business’ environmental caring efforts which are equal to the yearly emanations from 10,549 passenger vehicles. TMS approximates the amount of greenhouse gases reduced from its efforts is equal to the entire second generation of Prius sold in the country in 2008, which is about 154,000 vehicles. With that, it increases the motor company’s fuel economy, from 46 mpg to 52 for this year.

One of the key purposes of the WasteWise program is waste prevention – endeavors that decrease the production of waste – aiming to reduce the number of materials that need to be recycled or disposed. Toyota Motor Sales North American Parts Operation participates in the program by reusing more than 45,000 of is metal containers rather than using wood and cardboard pallets. Such containers can move parts across the company’s distribution network and do away with the need for millions of pounds of corrugated cardboard and wood in fiscal year 2009 alone.

Wade reiterates that Toyota’s primary focus is not only on reducing vehicle emissions but more on lessening emissions in all business aspects. He further adds that the company values efforts focused on minimizing environmental footprint.

Since 1994, there have been more than 1,100 groups and companies joining the WasteWise program. The program collaborates with manufacturers, service businesses and retailers from over 50 various industry sectors.
