Thomas Edison’s Words for Mankind and Environment

Thomas Edison’s Words for Mankind and Environment

It is quite ironic that American inventor Thomas Alba Edison created one of the highest contributing pollutants of the 90s. It is unfortunate that Edison’s legacy as a pioneer of America’s progress has to be tainted in such a way. After all, he created the incandescent light bulb that people today are substituting with more efficient models. Yet technological evolution has brought with it severe consequences.

It seems Thomas Edison made the 21st century incredibly dependent on electricity. Nevermind the repercussions this had on the environment. Presently, it seems the planet is revolting against the damages progress has created. This is in plain view in light of the increasing rate of natural disasters and in the steadily climbing temperature of the planet.

However, Edison was also a proponent of renewable energy and environmentally friendly technology. He tested and experimented with homemade wind turbines to produce electricity and offer residents an independent power source. He also teamed up with his friend Henry Ford to build an electric car that was powered with rechargeable batteries.

Indeed, renewable energy was one of Thomas Edison’s passions; his keen mind and unquenchable curiosity kept him pondering and experimenting throughout his life trying to perfect this elusive power source. He knew that oil and coal and other processed fossil fuels were temporary, and he saw the untapped possibility of renewable energy sources like solar power and wind power. He believed these sources could truly benefit mankind.

When Edison died in 1931, he shared one of his last words with his friends Harvey Firestone and Henry Ford:

“I’d put my money on the sun and solar energy. What a source of power! I hope we don’t have to wait until oil and coal run out before we tackle that.”
