As one of the nation’s largest retailers, Kroger is doing its part as an environmentally-friendly corporate citizen. It does so by minimizing the environmental impact of its vast operations consisting of 2,476 supermarkets and department stores throughout 31 states, 737 fuel centers, 41 food processing plants, and 393 jewelry stores. Green initiatives are a priority at Kroger as it engages its many associates to follow its environmental efforts and emerge with environmentally-friendly products.
Kroger’s green efforts are focused on five key areas:
* Energy conservation. Kroger contributes to energy conservation by converting the lighting of its more than 2,500 retail stores to the most energy-efficient lights around. These stores also have motion sensors installed; these sensors automatically turn the lights off when no one is present. They also have energy-friendly LED lights on the exit signs and an upgraded cooling system that replaced the old metal fans of thousands of its refrigerated cases with plastic motors that are lighter.
* Engaging associates. Kroger triumphs more in energy conservation by involving its many associates on its campaign. It has local energy teams assembled to formulate and implement energy reduction plans.
* Recycling initiatives. Kroger is a top recycler. Its stores, distribution centers and offices implement recycling programs that convert cardboard, plastic bags, shrink-wrap, scrap metal, glass, office paper, newspaper, aluminum and other non-biodegradable materials into reusable products. Old and spoiled produce or deli items in Ralphs and Food 4 less stores are turned into compost. Kroger’s recycling efforts have rerouted over 59,000 tons of trash from the landfills. Its use of thinner plastic material also cut the plastic waste volume of more than 1.3 million lbs. In 2007, Kroger’s chain of stores recycled over 9.1 lbs of plastic. In 2008, it recycled over 1 billion lbs of cardboard.
* Waste reduction. Kroger encourages its customers to use reusable bags when shopping, but its most important contribution to waste reduction is its donation of over $200 million worth of perishable food and groceries to more than 85 food banks nationwide. It works hand in hand with America’s Second Harvest in ending hunger in America, as well as in preventing the unnecessary disposal of still useful goods.
* Fuel conservation. Kroger is doing its best to cut petroleum use in its transportation services. Its vehicle fleet of 1,350 trucks and 7,100 trailers are using fuel efficient measures to conserve fuel. Kroger also leads the production of ethanol fuel, or E85, in the U.S., making it available to its fuel stations across the nation.
