The Body Shop: Business designed with earth in mind
The Body Shop International plc, more commonly known as The Body Shop, has 2,400 stores in 61 countries. It is the second largest cosmetic franchise in the world and is known for its products like Body Butter, Peppermint Foot Lotion, and Hemp. What The Body Shop believes in is that nature’s way is the only way to being beautiful.
For several years, The Body Shop has unceasingly sought out natural ingredients from all over the world to bring their customers products bursting with effectiveness to enhance their natural beauty. While doing this, The Body Shop also attempts to protect the blue planet and the people who depend on it — not because it is a fad, but because it is the only way to do business.
The Body Shop’s main mission is simply being a green retailer. Since its inception, it has always been in The Body Shop’s bloodstream to always “Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.” Part of this mission is to refrain from unnecessary packaging. An example of this is the bottles currently used by Body Shop. These bottles are 100% post consumer recycled plastics.

The company’s commitment to protect the planet is actually what makes its executives and employees aim for more. They are committed to becoming good corporate citizens by looking for sustainable raw ingredients, improving rainforests protection, and finding renewable resources. Even something as insignificant as a bar of soap can make a big difference. Compared to other brands, using palm oil in practically everything like margarine and glycerin soaps, The Body Shop soaps contain only palm oil from sustainable sources from Columbia. This means that The Body Shop is not contributing to deforestation, and avoids threatening the precious habitat of endangered species like the orangutan.
Indonesia and Malaysia’s forests have around 90% of the world’s palm oil. These forests are also home to the orangutans. There used to be 300,000 orangutans that inhabited the forest. Now 50,000 orangutans are struggling for survival. The Body Shop is one of the few retailers to come aboard The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil, a movement that leads global efforts in reducing the negative effects of palm towards the environment.
Being less environmentally destructive, the organically grown and reusable Body Shop cotton bag does not use harmful pesticides for its production. The Body Shop’s Community Trade partner, India’s Teddy Exports, is responsible for the bag’s production. As a testament to the company’s commitment to society, The Body Shop donates $2.00 to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence for every cotton bag that sold.
