The Ross Global Academy Charter School (RGACS) is an innovative public charter school located in the Lower East Side section of Manhattan in New York City. The school follows the curriculum of the Ross School in East Hampton, New York. This curriculum provides a holistic education aimed at cultivating in students a sense of global worldview as well as the necessary skills to become successful in the 21st century. The Ross Global Academy seeks to serve students from Kindergarten to grade 12 with various scholastic abilities. This includes English Language Learners (ELLs) and students with special needs.

The Ross School Model

The Ross Global Academy Charter School uses an interdisciplinary curriculum that incorporates cultural history, intercultural understanding, fluency in new technologies, and current world events. Programs are intended to promote responsibility, independent learning, collaborative problem solving, mutual respect, and exploration of individual interests.

Founding History and the Founder

Courtney Sale Ross founded the Ross Global Academy Charter School in collaboration with the Ross School, the Steinhardt School of Education in New York University, and the New York City’s Board of Education. Housed in the edifice of the former Tweed Courthouse, this New York City public charter school was opened on September 6, 2006 with 160 students in grades Kindergarten, 1, 5, and 6.

Courtney Sale Ross is the widow of Steven J. Ross, former CEO of Time Warner, the world’s largest media and entertainment conglomerate. Distinguished for her notable philanthropies and leadership in education, Courtney Sale Ross recognized that in order to prepare students in meeting the challenges that the 21st century brings, pioneering models for educational reform must be established. Aside from the Ross Global Academy Charter School and the Ross School, Courtney Sale Ross also founded the Ross Institute, which seeks “to promote understanding of the implications of globalization for pre-collegiate public education.”

Environment

As part of their holistic approach to education, the Ross Global Academy Charter School also attends to the well being of their students. For example, the institution exposes the students to eating organic, seasonal, and natural foods. Aside from being undeniably healthy for students, patronizing organic food is also environment-friendly since the use of harmful chemicals is eliminated in organic farming, thereby minimizing soil, water, and air pollution. Studies also show that organic farms are more energy efficient and more sustainable.
