The worldwide effort to combat climate change has seen different media used in spreading the word about slashing greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and the use of alternative fuel energy and renewable energy sources. Some have decided to spread it to a medium as powerful as the sun and as fast as the speed of sound.
Yes, some have decided to harness the energy of the sun to promote “peaceful activism,” environmental protection and efforts to combat climate change through rock music.
Powered by the Sun
Solar Punch, a New York-based band is the world’s only solar-powered music band. Equipped with a unique drum kit, specially designed gizmo guitars, and of course, solar panels, this band can play up to six hours of music to spread environmental awareness. In case of bad weather, they have rechargeable batteries, too.
Solar Punch came into conception in 2007 through the efforts of a duo of scientist-educators. Founding members James Dean Conklin, an animation designer and video producer, and Alan Bigelow, a science educator, came up with a vision to create a musical environmental movement that will help spread the message about climate change and the available solutions for it. The group maintains that their impact as artists will only be around until the human race exists, so might as well play in order to maintain the environment right. They later on collaborated with other band members Andrew Mattina and Frank Marino. Musicians such as Thomas Henry Rassam Culhane, an urban-planning scientist, and guitarist Paul Lincoln swap in during tours.
The ‘Green’ Way
The band believes that the responsibility to promote environment-friendly practices is an individual responsibility, so everyone can “do his thing” but the important thing is to find a “green way” to do it.
Using purely solar technology to power its instruments, the band has revolutionized environmental awareness not merely by preaching eco-friendly messages but by using eco-friendly gadgets as well.
According to Conklin, the sun is the best way to communicate with the people the reality that there are immediate solutions for the environmental problem and climate change crisis.
They performed during the 2009 Climate Solutions Road Trip in India together with the India Youth Climate Network (ICYN). The tour began in Chennai on January 2 and lasted until February 5 in the capital. This was after going across a number of cities like Mumbai, Bangalore, and Hyderabad aboard a van running on waste vegetable oil, three electric cars, a truck running on biofuel, and a van powered by solar energy.
During the tour, the band played around 10 originals such as “Plastic” and “Spinning Around,” and covered songs by Miles Davis, Grateful Dead, and the legendary John Lennon.
