P&G Greenovation is a commitment that begins with four “R”s — reducing, re-using and recycling, and of course, continuous reiteration of the need to sustain these practices. Procter & Gamble is taking responsibility for tomorrow by developing internal systems and operations that would produce less material waste, save energy, and release less carbon so they become more earth-friendly. Furthermore, Procter & Gamble Greenovation uses a three-way approach towards a more environmentally sustainable workplace by setting in new technologies, internal systems and practices in its plant, product, and people.

For their plants, Procter & Gamble exhibited its latest technology in Cabuyao Plant (Laguna, Philippines); one that help curb environmental footprint. To aid in cutting back on energy, P&G has installed active and passive solar panels at the cafeteria and warehouse to make use of the natural lighting. P&G also uses solar photovoltaic generators to power parking lamps. Together, these design innovations will cut back carbon emissions for over 80 tons annually.

In terms of their products, Procter & Gamble has investments aimed at innovation and research that will enable them to come up with products that help create a more livable community. One breakthrough example is Downy, its fabric conditioner that freshens and rinses in one step, thereby cutting down the use of water (for rinsing) by at least 60%. Due to this innovative product’s low water demand, average households can save about 480 liters of water in a month.

The company is also trying to find ways to equip their employees with information about living an earth-friendly lifestyle, both in their daily activities and work.

One of these measures involves encouraging company employees to use the stairs instead of the elevators. In addition, turning on of office lights will only be done an hour later in the morning, thereby reducing an approximate 20,000kw/h of electricity consumption in a year.

These measures will surely advance the end goal of Procter & Gamble’s global sustainability program, which is to mitigate its environmental footprint by 10% by the year 2012, eventually helping millions of people worldwide to lead greener, better lives.

Procter & Gamble is one of the world’s largest corporations in terms of market capitalization. Its headquarters is located in Cincinnati, Ohio.
