Last week, Nov. 25, President Obama released details of the U.S. position headed into the global warming conference in Copenhagen on Dec. 9, ClimateWire is reporting.
It includes a greenhouse gas emissions target for 2020 in the range of 17 percent below 2005 levels. Obama will be attending the talks, according to The White House.
In light of the president’s goal to reduce emissions 83 percent by 2050, the expected pathway set forth in this pending legislation would entail a 30 percent reduction below 2005 levels in 2025 and a 42 percent reduction below 2005 in 2030. This provisional target is in line with current legislation in both chambers of Congress and demonstrates a significant contribution to a problem that the U.S. has neglected for too long, according to The White House.
The international climate summit will bring together delegations from 192 nations and will be visited by approximately 15,000 people.
According to The White House Blog, the U.S. delegation will have a U.S. Center, providing a unique and interactive forum to share our story with the world. The Center will host over 70 events during the two-week conference that will highlight the strong actions the U.S. is taking at home as well as the leadership role the U.S. is pursuing internationally to combat global climate change.
The State Department has also started a new Web site to publicize events and news from Copenhagen.
The following keynote events and speakers are currently scheduled:
• Wednesday, Dec. 9: Taking Action at Home, EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson
• Thursday, Dec.10: New Energy Future: the role of public lands in clean energy production and carbon capture, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar
