One Wisconsin nonprofit is using small means to make a difference in the environment and raise money.
The Good News Project, based out of Wausau, Wisconsin, began collecting electronics a few years back as a way to bring in some extra cash, CNN reports. Recycling electronics, including computers and TVs, can be a huge hassle for many consumers who wouldn’t even know where or when to begin looking.
However, the 27-year-old organization holds recycling events eight times a year, charging 30 cents per pound with all proceeds going to the charity’s West Indies mission trips and charities across the state. The events raise about $50,000 per year, before paying recycler’s fees and two employees.
"People do want to do the right thing with their computers, and they know they are not supposed to toss them in the garbage," Dr. Chuck MacCarthy, who co-founded the Good News Project with his wife, Peggy, told CNN.
Recently, Wisconsin just passed a law requiring that manufacturers recycle 80 percent of their products, by weight, which has left the MacCarthy’s program in a state of flux as everyone tries to figure out how the law will be applied and how it will affect costs.
Despite uncertainty about how the new law will impact its operations, the charity is planning to expand its efforts to cities such as Kaukauna, which is located 100 miles from Wausau.
In addition to their recycling program, Good News also makes rain barrels out of plastics and runs its own garden, which has harvested more than 100 pounds this year. All produce is donated to local food pantries.
