LG Electronics: Carrying out Eco-Friendly Processes and Products

LG Electronics is one of the biggest electronics companies in the world and is a subsidiary of the LG Group, which was formed in 1947 and is a South Korean combine that manufactures cellular phones, petrochemical products, and chemicals.

The subsidiary developed a proprietary iris recognition technology in 1999 and has been marketing it for security and productivity applications. Its joint investment with Koninklijke Philips Electronics helped bolster its status as a major player in the LCD TV industry and has made it the world’s biggest manufacturer of plasma panels.

The term “LG” is from the company’s previous name, which was Lucky-GoldStar. The company’s initial composite label had a purpose; merchandise from their electronic product line were marketed under the brand name “GoldStar” while their household products were marketed under the brand name “Lucky.” Recently though, the corporate entity has decided to associate the slogan “Life’s good” with the company name and even conducting an awareness campaign to reinforce this change, including an online contest in YouTube.

The company is very proactive in carrying out environment-friendly design and manufacturing processes and policies. In 1994 it revealed its Environmental Declaration, which necessitates that in its management undertakings, all aspects should be taken into account in making decisions thus molding the company continually as an Earth-friendly commercial entity.

Several of the company’s green policies have been posted in their site. They read:

1. “LG thinks first of environment, safety and health in all the stages of its management activities, and takes such occasions as opportunities to create customer value.
2. LG establishes and thoroughly observes strict criteria based on environment, safety and health-related laws and regulations of regions and nations where it is operating, thus continuing to improve environment, safety, and health issues.
3. LG regularly assesses results of its activities relating to environment, safety, health, and subsequently publicizes the results.
4. All executives and employees at LG are deeply aware of their social responsibilities for conserving the environment, and positively participate in communities’ environment conservation efforts. “

The company certainly has employed these policies as it has produced numerous eco-friendly design schemes in their product lines. These include:

• Refrigerators – The company utilizes environment-friendly blowing agents refrigerants that do not deplete the layer of ozone protecting our planet. They also make minimal contribution to global warming. The company’s cooling machines have become the first refrigerators to garner the Korean Environmental Declaration of Products (EDP) certification. This certification can only be awarded to products whose manufacturing processes are transparent to consumers and environment advocacy organizations.
• Notebook PCs, DVD Players, Microwave Ovens – Technological advances and stringent company policies have enabled LG electronics to design these merchandise belonging to these product lines to consume less than one watt when in idle mode.
• Air Conditioners – LG Electronics’ air conditioners use a “twin power system” to lower power consumption by 65%. Needless to say, electronic appliances that have low power consumptions contribute less to global warming.
• Vacuum Cleaners – The company’s suction devices employ centrifugal force to segregate dust from air, doing away the need for dust bags. This innovative approach minimizes resources used

The company has integrated a rigid process that scrutinizes each of its products’ design, manufacture, utilization and recycle phases. It takes into account current environmental regulations and trends, developing alternatives to hazardous substances (when applicable), environmental impacts of the design, room for improvement if any, user feedback, and field recycling.

The collective cradle-to-grave assessments of each of LG Electronics’ product lines has been dubbed the “Life-Cycle Assessment” (LCA) by the company and has been carried out faithfully since 1995 everytime a new merchandise is conceived.

The company has also, with Germany’s Technical University Braunschweig, created an eco-design software. Named ATROiD, it helps company personnel assess the environmental impacts of recycling and/or disposing the products of the company at the first design phases.

With these measures, LG Electronics has guaranteed the world of products have greater reuse rates and low power consumptions.
