Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts and Co. KKR is a leading global private equity and alternative asset management firm that specializes in large, complex leveraged buyouts. Business Segments
Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts and Co. operations are divided into these segments:
• Private Equity – This segment consists of traditional private equity funds with fixed life and investment periods. The company has sponsored and managed 14 private equity funds. Its portfolio of investments comprises 45 companies with over $200 billion in annual revenues, spanning 14 industry sectors located throughout the United States, Asia, and Europe. KKR’s portfolio companies include Avago Technologies Limited; Biomet, Inc.; Capmark Financial Group Inc.; Dollar General Corporation; Energy Future Holdings Corp.; HCA Inc.; Toys “R” Us, Inc.; and U.S. Foodservice, Inc. Moreover, KKR Private Equity Investors, L.P. is a Guernsey limited partnership that participates in private equity and opportunistic investments, which are selected, structured, evaluated, monitored, and exited by investment professionals at Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts and Co.
• KKR Asset Management (KAM) – This segment consists of KKR Financial Holdings LLC, which invests primarily in corporate debt with $2 billion assets under management, and KKR Strategic Capital Fund which invests in debt transactions.
• Strategic Initiatives – which include KKR Capital Markets that supervises the capital raising efforts of KKR portfolio companies; and Public Markets Initiatives, which focuses on building new businesses and investing in public companies.
Founding History
In 1976, Jerome Kohlberg, Jr., Henry Kravis, and George R. Roberts founded the firm as a private equity firm that specialized in leverage buyouts. These founders previously worked at Bear, Stearns & Co. as buyout pioneers. Through the 1980s, the firm’s investments significantly increased and included deals with Safeway Stores, Duracell, and RJR Nabisco.
Environmental Initiatives
Ken Mehlman of Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts and Co.’s acquisition of Energy Future Holdings has led the company to strengthen their environmental policies and incorporate environmental considerations into their investment decisions.
Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts and Co. partnered with the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) in creating the Green Portfolio Project, which aims to seek ways in measuring and improving the environmental performance and efficiency of the company’s U.S. portfolio companies. Moreover, the firm participated in EDF’s Climate Corps Program, by which the firm went through an energy audit of its offices and it executed improvements in energy efficiency.
