Johnson & Johnson is a highly diversified, multinational corporation that manufactures pharmaceutical products, consumer packaged goods, and medical devices. The company holds its worldwide headquarters in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Referred to as the “Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies,” the corporation has over 250 subsidiaries in 57 countries, employing more than 119,000 people. Additionally, Johnson & Johnson products are marketed in more than 175 countries. A Fortune 500 company, Johnson & Johnson is recognized as the world’s most respected company by Barron’s Magazine.

Johnson & Johnson has an impressive list of operating companies including Janssen Pharmaceutica, Animas Corporation, Ethicon, Inc., BabyCenter, L.L.C., OraPharma, Johnson & Johnson – Merck Consumer Pharmaceuticals Co., McNeil Consumer Healthcare, ALZA Corporation, LifeScan, Inc., Cordis Corporation, and Biosense Webster, Inc., to name some.
The company offers a long catalog of brands; in fact, some of them have become household names. Its brands include Neutrogena, Imodium, Visine, Listerine, Nizoral, Carefree, Acuvue, Clean & Clear, Aveeno, and much more.
Founding History
Johnson & Johnson was founded in 1886 by brothers Robert Wood Johnson, Edward Mead Johnson, and James Wood Johnson. The company began by producing a line of first-ever commercial sterile surgical dressings. In 1887, Johnson & Johnson was incorporated and by 1919 it started its international expansion in Canada. Robert Wood Johnson became the company’s first president. Upon his death in 1910, James Wood Johnson took over as president until 1932.
Environmental Initiatives
Johnson & Johnson persistently strives to protect the environment. This is one way of achieving their goal of improving the health and well being of families. The corporation has increased its level of transparency as 66% of its facilities have submitted environmental sustainability information by year-end 2007. Johnson & Johnson has also reduced its absolute water use by 6% from 2005 to 2007; its energy use by 12.7% from 1990 to 2007; and its hazardous waste by 4% and non-hazardous waste by 10% from 2005 to 2007. The company has improved its packaging, having eliminated 84% of secondary and tertiary PVC packaging by switching to the use of safe non-polycarbonate containers for the packaging of liquids. Some 93% of packaging and 83% of office paper are made of fiber from certified forests.
Moreover, Johnson & Johnson has partnered with some nonprofit organizations and environmental groups such as the World Wildlife Fund, the Carbon Disclosure Project, the Climate Savers, the Green Power Partnership, The Wilderness Society, and the United States Climate Action Partnership, among others.
