Of all the environmental organizations in the United States, Greenpeace and the Sierra Club are two of the most prominent and politically active in the advancement of environmental issues. These two organizations have continuously strived to prevent any policies or laws that may allow some entities to engage in activities that pose a great threat to human health and the environment.
The Greenpeace Foundation is an international organization that started out as a group based in Canada to oppose the United States’ nuclear testing in the 1960’s. However, the group’s focus started shifting a few years after that to zero in on other environmental threats and issues. At the moment, the group’s foci are on irresponsible fishing and farming, climate change, e-waste, toxicity levels and disarmament.

The Sierra club is an organization that has its roots in the United States and just like Greenpeace, it has expanded its reach in terms of the issues that the organization focuses on. In its inception, the Sierra club focused on ensuring that federal and local legislation will not pose any threat to a community’s natural resources. One of its first triumphs was being able to prevent the passing of a proposed law that would significantly reduce the area of the Yellowstone National Park. Since then, the Sierra Club has had its share of successful campaigns in several major environmental issues such as global warming, public health and others.
Sierra Club
These two organizations serve as perfect examples that organized efforts to ensure that environment is unharmed are feasible and effective. By ensuring that they start campaigns and conduct follow-throughs on these, they greatly contribute to the preservation of the environment. Greenpeace’s active campaigns to preserve the world’s oceans, for example, have successfully prevented poaching and have turned over several illegal fishers to the concerned authorities. The Sierra Club on the other hand, has been able to prevent several environment threats from materializing throughout its decades-long history because of their consistent lobbying in the United States’ legislation houses.
These two organizations, along with other environmental groups, effectively prove to us that the environment’s deteriorating condition is not a hopeless case, that humans can enact change in their environment. What remains to be seen, however, is if whether humankind is a hopeless case.
