Many Americans consider smoking a bad habit, producing stained fingers and a distinct odor – not to mention it’s deadly. The American Cancer Society reports that tobacco-related lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States for both men and women.
While citizens are (not unjustly) primarily concerned about tobacco smoke emitting carcinogens into the air, there’s another negative side effect of smoking that often gets overlooked. Smoking aside, tobacco production significantly damages the environment. According to GlobalIssues.org, once land is used to grow tobacco, the surrounding soil is degraded and often leads to failing crops and killed plants. Additionally, countless trees are killed for wood needed to cure tobacco leaves.
Many are celebrating the fact that this month 26 states have enacted statewide bans on smoking in all enclosed public spaces. This will help cut down second-hand smoke issues in bars and restaurants, and it may help deter smoking by making it inconvenient – or it may not.
Smokers can still easily step outside to light up, and tobacco’s negative impact on the environment might continue. Or it might not, and smokers might soon be able to get their nicotine fix indoors. Purportedly eco-friendly Green Smoke cigarettes are now available for purchase.
The electronic cigarettes have a disposable cartridge that offers users the nicotine without the tobacco. They come in six flavors – menthol, coffee, chocolate, vanilla, cherry and – for those reluctant to make the switch – tobacco.
Still, without the tobacco smokers can get the nicotine they crave without taking in the most carcinogenic part of traditional cigarettes. The lack of tobacco also means no second-hand smoke, no disruption to farmland for tobacco crops and – as the makers say, "by far a cleaner environment."
The alternative cigarettes have already found some fans, as indicated by the YouTube phenomenon surrounding them. Video clips show smokers in a nightclub taking drags and claiming it’s just like smoking a real cigarette, while other non-smokers sit by unphased and unable to smell the smoke.
If these electronic cigarettes take off, it may not be good news for the tobacco industry, but it could be great news for smokers’ loved ones and the atmosphere.
