In 2010, it seems like one of the biggest global resolutions was increased efforts to go green. Commercial buildings around the world are increasingly striving for eco-friendly certifications and homeowners are commonly switching to energy-saving light bulbs.
But a glimpse at one eco-friendly abode – which Fast Company ranked as one of the globe’s greenest homes – shows that some people have turned green resolutions into a lifestyle.
The Dome House in New York looks a bit like a wooden space ship, and its high-tech, eco-friendly design is certainly out of this world. The house’s entire facade rotates to make the most of the sunlight for solar heat gain.
Designer Noah Gullickson says the home is designed to store summer-acquired heat to warm the home through the winter and keep it cool in the warmer seasons. "It should stay about seventy degrees in here, pretty much year round," Gullickson told New York House magazine.
The designer says the dome home has performed well during summers. Though it hasn’t been necessary, he also installed an in-floor radiant heat system powered by a 98-percent energy-efficient, propane-fueled boiler for back-up heat during winter.
The eco-efficiency doesn’t stop there. The wood used to construct the architecture and accents of the dome-shaped house is entirely from the trees that were cleared from its lot, reports the source.
Gullickson told New York House magazine that he had the idea for the dome when he was researching environmentally exemplary construction. Performance Building Systems in Durango, Colorado supplied the plans, instructions and some materials for the rotating shell.
This means that other environmentally-conscious homeowners can create their very own dome homes this year. If you’re thinking of making some green renovations to your home, perhaps you should consider building an eco-friendly house. The overall energy savings might really pay off.
