The New York Times reports that several mobile phone manufacturers are doing their part in bringing new sustainable and environmentally friendly companies and products to the market. Although the impact of recession may have drawn some skepticism among analysts, mobile phone makers are actually eyeing the gradually increasing number of consumers who prefer environmentally safe devices, even if it would mean having to pay more.

This will prove to be beneficial to consumers since an increased number of manufacturers of environmentally friendly mobile products will heighten competition, accelerating the development of greener and better designs and solutions. This will raise the demand for green mobile phones and prices will eventually fall.

Nokia, for example, is said to promote the green features of its mobile products such as phones that would trigger the alarm when fully charged. This will alert the user and remind him to detach the phone charger from the wall socket. A light sensor also enables the phone to save energy through detecting natural light. The Nokia 5630 XpressMusic has a program called “we:offset” that allows users to gauge their carbon emissions. It also provides a link to a payment form for those who want to pay to make up for the pollution they make. Nokia is a Finland-based multinational communications company and is the world’s largest manufacturer of mobile phones. Aside from mobile phones, Nokia offers products including smartphones, multimedia computers and networks.

Motorola has recently released MOTO W233 Renew here in the United States. The phone is made from recycled plastic water bottles that can be completely recycled. Its packaging is made of 100% recycled paper and it includes a prepaid shipping envelope that allows buyers to send their old mobile device for recycling. Moreover, MOTO W233 Renew is the first certified carbon-neutral phone, since the company will pay to offset the carbon emissions produced in the manufacture, distribution, and operation of W233. Payments for the W233 are intended to help a landfill in New Bedford, Massachusetts in catching and using the methane gas created.

Motorola is a U.S.-based Fortune 100 company that offers wireless telephone handsets as well as home and broadcast network equipment.

Sony Ericsson has also exhibited GreenHeart, a concept phone that is made from recycled biodegradable components. With its global corporate headquarters in London, Sony Ericsson is a 50-50 joint venture of leading consumer electronics manufacturer Sony Corporation and Sweden-based telecommunications corporation Ericsson.

Digicel, the Latin American mobile phone network provider, and ZTE, a China-based global provider of telecommunications equipment and network solutions, will be launching their solar-powered cost-efficient mobile phones, targeting billions of people who have inadequate or zero access to electricity.
