Fujitsu-Siemens: Revolutionary Server Design in Energy Efficiency

Fujitsu Siemens Computers, Inc. is an international Information Technology supplier of computing products solely in Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. The company is a merger of the Japanese company Fujitsu and the German conglomerate Siemens AG.

Although the IT company sells exclusively to Africa, Europe, and the Middle East, its services division has a global coverage of 170 countries.

Key People:

  • Bernd Bischoff – President and Chief Executive Officer
  • Kai Flore – Chief Financial Officer, Chief Information Officer and Chief Strategy Officer
  • Heribert Göggerle – Senior Vice President Supply Operations
  • Satoru Hayashi – Executive Chairman of the Board
  • Dieter Herzog – Executive Vice President Infrastructure Products
  • Dr. Joseph Reger – Chief Technology Officer
  • Barbara Schädler – Chief Marketing Officer
  • Richard Schlauri – Executive Vice President Infrastructure Services
  • Herbert Schönebeck – Senior Vice President Consumer & Devices
  • Fujitsu Siemens Computers has a wide gamut of products, which includes handhelds, desktop consumer PCs, and IT infrastructure solutions and services. It specializes in eco-friendly, energy efficient computer products and may very well be at the vanguard of green IT products what with its award-wining Primergy TX120 server that won the Intel Server and Storage Innovation Award.

As of this writing the Primergy TX120 is purportedly the “most energy efficient server in the world,” according to the Fujitsu Siemens website. The TX120 is not a slacker either and with its performance-to-energy-consumption ratio, the server is indeed deserving of the award. An overview of the specifications of Fujitsu Siemens Computers’ first overwhelmingly successful product in the field of energy-efficient design:

    • Dual-Core Intel(R) Xeon(R) UP processor with up to 4 MB SLC and 1066 MHz Front Side Bus or Intel(R) Celeron(R)
    • 4 Dual Inline Memory Modules up to 8GB each,
    • 4-port Serial Attached SCSI controller with RAID 0, 1, 1E
    • Up to 2 hot-plug hard disks
    • Integrated Remote Management Controller (iRMC) with iRMC Advanced Pack option
    • 1 Gbit/s Ethernet Controller
The TX120, which is a tower server:
    • Emits less noise and heat – the company has designed it to produce only 28 decibels (dB) at idle mode while outputting only 31 dB when operating. This effectively cuts the usual noise tower servers make by half.
    • Consumes less space – its dimensions are 4 inches wide by 13 inches high by 16 inches deep. This drastic reduction in size is the result of the company’s unprecedented heat dissipation design: high-temperature components of the server are arranged along a linear heat pipe and two tiny, temperature controlled fans are configured in such a way that they create a virtual wind tunnel, which alleviates the system’s heat.

This unique configuration also allows consumers the freedom to choose whether to align TX120 units horizontally or vertically, allowing users free reign on how to allocate office space.

    • Consumes 35-40% less energy compare to other servers – power consumption at full load is a mere 163 watts — the power consumption of some mid- to high-end consumer video accelerators.

According to Richard McCormack, senior vice president of marketing at Fujitsu Computer Systems of Sunnyvale, California, the tower server is good “for a small office of five to 20 users depending on the application.”

This tower server is a revolutionary design, one that mayhap will pave the way for energy-efficient machines. Already, Fujitsu Siemens Computers has churned out more energy efficient products including the SCALEO Li 2405 green edition, whose target is the consumer PC market. As with the TX120, it is energy efficient, has a halogen-free motherboard, very low noise emission, and has an ISO 14001-compliant eco-friendly production process.

As evidenced by their line of Primergy servers, these two products are indeed heralding Fujitsu Siemens Computers future lines of ecologically-friendly machines. Says Bernd Bischoff, Chief Executive Officer of the Japanese-German company, “We will be the first IT vendor to completely move to energy-efficient products. We will be the first to offer them without additional expense to the customer.”

The company aims to reduce the space footprint, operating costs, and power dissipation of data centers in the United Kingdom by as much as 40% by June this year.
