Environmental Change and its Threats to Mankind
According to a report ran by both the United Nations Foundation and the Worldwatch Institute, the whole human race’s impact on the environment can certainly threaten the health of mankind as much as it does other species.
The official report, which was entitled “Global Environmental Change: the Threat to Human Health,” has stated that the ongoing change in both climate and land contributed greatly to the spread of several diseases such as malaria. This sudden onslaught of environmental changes, as well as the diseases they bring, affects an enormous number of people, especially those who are living in developing countries.
The report was written by Samuel Myers, an instructor at the Harvard Medical School and a research associate at the Harvard University Center for the Environment. According to him, the majority of the threats that are brought about by the rapid environmental change come as a result of man’s abuse of the earth’s water supply.
However, if people would choose to take necessary measures immediately, most of the damage will be prevented. Possible damages can be prevented through national level risk assessments, as well as technical and financial assistance that can help nations adapt to the health effects brought about by the increasing environmental change.
Samuel Myers’ report basically calls for various efforts to counter the possible dangers. He calls for the wealthy countries around the world to assist the developing and underdeveloped countries to adjust to the imminent environmental changes. His report suggests several solutions that would bring general benefits such as developing more tolerant crop strains, improving public health infrastructure, creating early warning systems, providing better disease surveillance, as well as increasing freshwater storage.
These actions, and maybe even more, can be done immediately in order to protect the development of both large and small populations. We, as a people, brought this upon ourselves, and it is up to us to make the choice and take immediate action.
