Progress was made recently for those who maintain global warming is a serious threat, according to the blog Green Inc.

But this time, instead of scientists, a group of top economists, based on a survey from the New York University School of Law, said global warming is a detriment to the United States economy.

They concurred that a cap-and-trade system of carbon regulation would help spur energy efficiency.

“Outside academia the level of consensus among economists is unfortunately not common knowledge,” Richard Revesz, dean of the law school, said during a press conference on Nov. 4. “The results are conclusive – there is broad agreement that reducing emissions is likely to have significant economic benefits.”

Surveys were sent to about 290 economists who had some expertise in climate change. Roughly half responded to the anonymous survey to a dozen questions that asked their opinions on issues like the impact of climate change or certain industries.

Eighty-four percent of the economists agreed that climate change “presents a clear danger” to the United States and global economies. They said agriculture would likely bear the brunt of the hit.

The economists said they favored limiting carbon emissions and most were in support of auctioning emission allowances.
