It isn’t easy being green when you live a fast-paced New York lifestyle. People passing through Grand Central Terminal on a daily basis are offered disposable coffee cups and plastic utensils for food they eat in a hurry as they dash the station.
But now a new feature of Grand Central will make it easy for even the busiest of the eco-conscious to wear their green hearts on their sleeves – literally. In honor of Earth Day – April 22 – an EcoLux Boutique will open a pop-up shop in Grand Central’s Vanderbilt Hall, selling environmentally sustainable clothing and accessories from top designers.
The boutique will take up nearly a quarter of Vanderbilt Hall as part of Earth Day New York’s week-long celebration at Grand Central. The shop will be open from April 19 – 24.
The EcoLux pop-up boutique was inspired by the success of the GreenShows – New York City’s green fashion week held last month, reports TreeHugger.com. Because of the popularity of the event, designers including Samantha Pleet, House of Organic and Redhanded Bags have gotten involved and will be creating environmentally sustainable pieces to be sold in the train station.
The pop-up boutique will also offer work women on the go quick cosmetic consultations from Dex New York Cosmetics – which boasts products made primarily from plant derivatives and minerals.
The easy access to these well-crafted, sustainable products might help spark a trend in New York fashion favoring eco-friendly designs and – as many fashionistas will tell you – once it takes New York, a trend can capture the interest of style mavens around the globe.
Eric Dorfman, founder of the GreenShows, told Crain’s New York he has high hopes for the boutique. "It’s an open boutique," he told the source. "We’re creating a six-day pop-up store of luxury eco."
Word on the eco-fashion street is that this six-day boutique might pop up in New York again well after Earth Day. If you miss the Grand Central pop-up shop this month, Dorfman says you can catch more boutiques in September when Fashion Night Out in New York rolls around.
