Dow Chemical, the largest chemical company in the U.S., is turning stereotypes upside down by continuing to call for a congressional climate bill to set regulations that would establish a price on carbon emissions.
Peter Molinaro, company vice-president for federal and state government affairs, and Douglas May, vice president for energy and climate change, have been working with members of Congress and the media to continue pushing for a federal climate and energy change bill, the New York Times reports.
In lobbying Congress, Dow has presented a variety of new, green technologies that could combine to benefit both the environment and business. One innovation Molinaro and May carried with them was Dow’s Powerhouse solar shingles. A roof covered with these shingles could produce enough energy to meet 60 to 80 percent of a household’s electricity needs.
"We just see it differently," Molinaro told the Times. "We start with the premise that you can’t solve the climate problems without chemistry. That’s what we do, and that is on the plus side."
Currently, the company has a $1.6-billion annual research and development budget, which it has used to investigate and implement new green products such as the solar shingle as well as insulation materials, lithium-ion batteries for hybrid and electric cars and advanced diesel engine filters.
If a bill were passed, Dow’s sales would increase. The solar shingle, if adopted by the government and supported by consumers, would have the potential to reach $5 billion in revenue for the company.
Recently, Dow announced that it had reduced the amount of energy used in production by 38 percent between 1990 and 2009. Dow plans to further reduce its energy intake by an additional 25 percent by 2015.
