According to the New York Times, fashion designer Diane Von Furstenburg, along with her husband Barry Diller, have made a $10 million donation to the High Line Project in a concerted effort to beautify New York City. The High Line is a public park built on a defunct railway that runs 30 feet above Manhattan. The project has already transformed the area near its 22-block stretch near the river, leading to new development projects in the area. The first two sections of the High Line cost $152 million; $44 million this cost was raised by Friends of the High Line.

“I fell in love with the project, with the place,” Ms. Von Furstenberg said. “It’s a beautiful green ribbon that will travel from Gansevoort to the Javits Center.”

Diane Von Furstenburg and Barry Diller also issued a $10 million challenge for anyone to match their donation. Their challenge was met by Philip and Lisa Maria Falcone.

This gift is Diane Von Furstenberg and Barry Diller’s second major donation to the High Line Project. The philanthropic couple bestowed a $5 million donation to the project in 2005.

Diane’s son, Alexander Von Furstenberg, is also an active philanthropist. He is currently heading up the The Diller – Von Furstenburg Foundation, which is dedicated to supporting a broad spectrum of non-profit institutions in education, community reform, environmental advocacy, disease research, child care, arts and humanities, and human rights. Like his mother, Alex Von Furstenberg is a committed environmentalist and major supporter of the Heal the Bay project, which is working hard to clean up the waters of Santa Monica Bay.
