It’s no secret that the issue of global warming is one that divides many viewpoints in the country, especially in the U.S. Senate. But on Thursday, Nov. 5, Democrats on the Environment and Public Works Committee pushed through a climate bill without any debate by Republicans, according to an article in the New York Times.

It passed with an 11-1 vote. Support was given by all Democratic members except for Sen. Max Baucus from Montana.

“The seven Republicans boycotted the committee meetings this week, saying they had not had sufficient time to study the bill and demanding that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) conduct a thorough study of its economic costs and benefits,” according to the article.

It also speculates that the action of the Republicans will make it difficult for Democrats to attain the votes they need to pass the bill on the Senate floor, which could come this week.

Sen. Barbara Boxer, a Democrat from California, said the EPA had already done such a study.

“A majority of the committee,” Boxer said in a statement, “believes that S. 1733, and the efforts that will be built upon it, will move us away from foreign oil imports that cost Americans $1 billion a day, it will protect our children from pollution, create millions of clean energy jobs and stimulate billions of dollars of private investment.”
