Dell Inc.

Based in Round Rock, Texas, Dell Inc. is a multinational technology systems and services company involved in the development, manufacture, sale, and support of personal computers and other related software and hardware products. As of 2008, it is the 2nd largest seller of computers after HP. From a company that started out with a mere capital of $1,000, Dell Inc. has cultivated itself to become a leading technology enterprise, receiving revenues of $61.33 billion and employing 80,800 as of 2008.

Company Products

Dell Inc. offers an impressive collection of technology products including desktop computers, notebook computers, data storage devices, servers, network switches, printers, electronics, and accessories. Dell also provides exceptional services to its customers such as enterprise services, 24/7 customer support, and optimum business solutions.

History

In 1984, Michael Dell founded Dell Computer Corporation although it carried the name PC’s Limited. Michael Dell started the company with only a $1,000 seed capital before he received a $300,000 expansion capital from his family.

In 1985, the company designed and built the Turbo PC, the 1st computer system of its own design that featured an Intel 8088 processor running at 8 MHz. By 1987, PC’s Limited opened its 1st international subsidiary in the United Kingdom and over the next four years, it established 11 more international operations.

PC’s Limited was officially renamed Dell Inc. in 2003.

Environmental Initiatives

In 2003, Dell Inc. launched “Dell Recycling,” a program that enables and encourages customers to donate their computer components to charity. By 2006, Dell Inc. was able to recover 78 million pounds of IT equipment from customers. The company also offered free recycling of all Dell-branded products for consumers worldwide.

In 2005, the company introduced a new product called OptiPlex platform, which features a lead-free motherboard, power supply, and chassis. Dell Inc. also announced its goal of becoming the “Greenest Technology Company on the Planet” and launched a carbon-neutral initiative in 2007. That same year, Dell Inc. launched the “Plant a Tree for Me” program that works to help consumers offset carbon emission from systems. The program was then expanded through the launch of “Plant a Forest for Me” for corporate customers and partners.

In 2008, the company reached its goal of becoming carbon neutral. Its headquarters in Texas is now powered by 100% clean energy. Although it has increased its purchases of renewable energy 10 times since 2004, the company’s utilization of efficient and renewable energy has allowed the company to save $3 million each year.
