June may be the most popular month for weddings, but this month, Dream Green Weddings and the Green Bride Guide have partnered in launching a campaign to make April "Greener Wedding Awareness" month.

The Green Bride Guide is a forum for betrothed couples who want eco-chic nuptials. It offers the soon-to-be married insight on green wedding options and includes features including a carbon calculator and recycling chart so couples can see the environmental impact of their ceremonies.

Dream Green Weddings offers similar services. It helps connect brides and grooms with suppliers who offer eco-friendly wedding favors and decorations.

According to TheWeddingReport.com, there were approximately 2.2 million weddings in the United States in 2008. While this sounds like a lot of matrimonial bliss, it probably also meant a lot of waste – the Green Bride Guide says the average wedding produces 63 tons of CO2 and anywhere from 400 – 600 pounds of trash.

The Greener Wedding Awareness Campaign will work to educate engaged couples about eco-friendly yet luxurious choices options in wedding planning. Simultaneously, the campaign strives to encourage mainstream wedding vendors to initiate greener business practices.

The two organizations hope to catch the green wave sweeping the nation for Earth Day on April 22 with the timing of the Greener Wedding Awareness initiative. Officials also hope that the campaign will come in time to influence the high volume of June weddings right around the corner.

Heather Teague, founder of Dream Green Weddings said, "April is the start of the busy wedding season and offers a unique opportunity to spread this important message during a time of the year when people are talking about weddings and environmental issues."

Couples can take this as an opportunity to say "I do" to each other and to sustainability while partying the night away in eco-style.
