Global warming is the name for the gradual increase in temperature of the Earth’s surface that has worsened since the industrial revolution. It has been two decades since global warming studies have gained considerable attention and evidence exists that most of this warming has been caused by human activities. We have altered the chemical composition of the atmosphere through a buildup of greenhouse gases – primarily carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide.
However, there is one company that has committed itself to becoming more sustainable by using alternative fuels and applying more efficient processes to save energy. They use farm turbines to help reduce carbon dioxide emissions and contribute to a cleaner environment.
Renewable Energy through Turbines
First, let us understand what carbon footprint means. Carbon footprint is the measure of the impact our activities have on the environment, particularly on our climate. It relates to the amount of greenhouse gases produced through burning fossil fuels used for electricity, heating, transportation and other things we consider to be necessities.
Cemex, a Mexican-based cement company, is using wind energy to help reduce its carbon footprint. The company is part of the Eurus wind farm in Oaxaca, Mexico. The wind farm is used as a way to decrease carbon output by using renewable energy produced by the farm’s turbines.
A wind turbine is a rotating machine that converts the kinetic energy of wind into mechanical energy.
How Cemex Reduced Carbon Footprint
Cemex improved air quality and reduced its carbon output by using 25% of the energy produced by the wind farm. Green Momentum reported that this year, the Cemex environment initiative has allowed the company to improve its ability to cut CO2. The company significantly reduced its CO2 emission by 15.8% over 1990 levels.
Lorenzo H. Zambrano, chairman of the board and CEO of Cemex, said all of this is just part of a larger attempt to improve the company’s contribution to the environment.
