The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) released its latest report on global warming last February 23, 2010. The UNEP report, which contains forecast models compiled from nine research groups, revealed that the pledges to cut emissions by the different nations involved in the Copenhagen Accord are not enough to prevent temperatures from rising by 2˚Celsius or more. April 22nd will mark the 40th anniversary of the first Earth Day and with a new anniversary comes a new meaning for the day. Started in 1970, Earth Day was originally conceived as a day in which the people of the world could come together and educate themselves about the needs of the planet. Many environmentalists have been feeling uneasy about President Barack Obama’s embrace of nuclear power as an alternative source of clean energy to fight climate change.
